WE CAN TEST YOU
What is the Bikelab experience?
In layman’s terms it’s the ‘nuts and bolts’ of your performance enhancing experience. It’s where our experts get into the finer detail of how your body – your ‘engine’ – works when being tested on our hi-tech equipment.
More importantly, it’s where we explain, measure, monitor and fine tune the development of your speed, power and overall performance so that you walk away feeling reinvigorated and recharged – having learned how to get the most out of your workout.
Why get tested?
Know your limits: understand your physical limitations, learn to train at the correct intensity, and more importantly learn not to injure yourself.
Get the most from your workout: testing is the only way that you can learn how efficient your workout is for your own unique physiology so that you can increase the effectiveness of your training.
Achieve results: so that you can monitor your progress and see, through real-time data, how your performance is improving at every level of the sporting spectrum.
Improve your recovery time: every workout increases fitness but there’s a cost. We structure efficient training programs that alleviate overtraining, injuries and frustration.
Enhance your competitiveness: elite athlete or not, you probably have a competitive streak whether it’s breaking away from the bunch or leaving the pack scrambling in your wake.
“I see too many people exercise too hard,” says Bikelab’s Liam Kelly. “The adage, ‘no pain, no gain’, is nonsense. It’s not about slugging through the hardest training session, striving for the greatest number of kilometers, or impressing the people in the gym by lifting the heaviest weights. If you want to lose weight, increase speed, or improve endurance you need to understand your unique physiology and adapt this to a smart training method that delivers maximum efficiency and results without stressing your body out.”
What tests are available?
VO2 or ‘maximal oxygen uptake
How hard you exercise – your intensity – is a critical factor in any aerobic exercise. We measure it on either a bike or a treadmill. You wear a mask and we measure the volume of air expired along with the percentage of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the expired air. Basically, the more oxygen your blood transports to the muscle cells, the better your performance.
We can then determine your:
- Aerobic Threshold – the optimal intensity for developing endurance.
- Lactate Threshold – the highest intensity at which the body can recycle lactic acid as quickly as it’s produced.
- VO2 Max – the amount of oxygen your body is capable of using in one minute.
“Knowing your LT, or Lactate Threshold is particularly valuable information,” says Liam, “as LT is trainable as your body can develop a higher threshold for lactic buildup.”
Metabolic Rate Analysis
Testing your metabolism is important for any weight loss or sports weight management program.
And while it takes more energy or calories to move more mass, finding an ideal weight for your health and performance is not always easy.
At Bikelab we can provide you with data to better manage your weight by testing your:
- Personal Energy Balance (P.E.B) – how many calories you burn in everyday lifestyle activities, resting, and exercise.
- Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR)- how many calories your body burns at rest, whether you have a fast, medium or slow metabolism.
- Exercise Metabolism Rate (EMR) – determines how many fat and carbohydrate calories are burned for energy.
- To determine how many calories you’re burning at a particular pace we use a gas analyser and heart-rate monitor linked to a laptop to measure your lung capacity and heart rate.
“It’s amazing technology that allows us to accurately calculate at what heart rate your body moves through aerobic and anaerobic thresholds,” Liam Kelly
Pedal Efficiency testing
Bikelab can improve your pedaling efficiency by a remarkable 50%! Achieve maximum wattage with less physical tension by letting us adjust your riding position and scrutinize your individual biomechanics. You spend less energy to get more energy.
DNA testing for recovery
This is your once-in-a-lifetime genetic blueprint. All it involves is a swab of the mouth and then our sports scientists can determine through an Excel gene DNA test, how your physiology is influenced by your genetic profile.
Running gait analysis
Moving efficiently is important to avoid injuries and this requires having the right fitting shoe. Every runner has a different running motion which depends on their running style. At Bikelab we have the equipment and staff who are trained in gait analysis. They can thoroughly evaluate and analyse your running gait using dual camera video technology so that you can choose the right shoe to fit your unique running style.
Cardio Coach Test
Enables you to pre-plan your nutrition during training and racing. Measures how many calories are burned during a workout at every exercise heart rate level.
Everything is recorded and reviewed
All of our testing is combined with coaching programs that are tailor-made to suit your personal results.
Bikelab’s experts provide:
- Specialist training programs and specific training zones to suit your strengths and challenge you,
- An online diary and pre-program your devices (Garmin, Suunto, Polar) so that all your workouts are recorded and then reviewed for analysis, and
- A comprehensive nutrition plan – advice on the essential carbohydrates, fats and proteins you need to train and race with using EMR, RMR and VO2 data.
- The tools, techniques and advice to give your performance an almighty boost.
