Bike fitting technology – cutting edge and internationally recognised
Bikelab is at the forefront of sports science technology…
So old and mundane methods of testing have no place in the ‘lab’ where innovation and leading edge equipment are used and… there is no room for error and no guesswork.
Bikelab micro tunes your bike fit using the latest technology including:
- 2D and video bike fit and positioning set up – determines your individual and optimal position. You can also gain accurate visual feedback on your movement employing Silicon Coach software
- Calfee Sizer Cycle for ordering frames
- duplicates the geometry of any manufacturers production frame so that you can test a demo bike to get an idea of the quality of the ride
- simulate different stem lengths on a bike in stock so that you can change actual stem length only once on the stock bike
- Retul reads the body in motion in three dimensions.
Bikelab achieves optimal power transfer?
It all rests on the latest technology and at Bikelab we have state-of-the-art apparatus, in this case Look Keo Fit Technology for cleat positioning and adjustment. This technology is complemented with the Keo Pedal
“It’s very simple, the process is twofold,” says Liam. “Not only do we take the data from the Keo System, we also source additional information from the biomechanics video we take of you and your pedal position on the bike. It might sound like an involved process but each adjustment, as minor as it is, can make a difference to your riding style and ultimate performance. It’s this attention to detail which continues to attract cyclists to Bikelab.” Liam Kelly.
7 steps to prevent sore ankles…feet…hands…knees…back…shoulders…neck
Bikelab has start-of-the-art digital motion capture software and a fit assessment process enabling our professionals to:
- Analyse you.
- Measure you anatomically, and your bike.
- Video Analyse – detects subtle biomechanical issues not apparent to the naked eye.
- Plot the angles and accurately measure the variances and compares this to a standardised tolerance.
- Adjust and/or refit saddle, pedals, cleats, bars, stem and so on.
- Analyse again – for further accurate quantitative measurements.
- Recommendation of a Re-test 3 months post the new setup to ensure the new position is positive.
Testing, positioning and training – three crucial elements ensuring a complete examination of how you fit your bike and your bike fits you.
Bikelab builds the bike around the individual… using proven and tested technology that is endorsed by professionals and sporting academies and institutes throughout the world.
A small improvement can make a big difference to a result… “It typically does translate into higher speed. They will be faster, longer, because they are comfortable. They may also be faster for short efforts.” Dr Andy Pruitt, who applied his Body Geometry Fit Integration Technology to assist Saxo Bank riders.
This is a new age of measuring fitness and performance… “I would say that I am definitely new school and take advantage of all the latest science and technology available to me, believing it is an essential component of being successful.” Dario Cioni (Silence-Lotto) who trains at the famous Mapei centre in Milan which Bikelab models itself on.
Bikelab’s bike fitting is out of the ordinary…
If a shoe doesn’t fit, why wear it? The same applies to a bike. An ill-fitting shoe will damage your feet and adversely affect your gait i.e. the way you walk.
The same applies to a bike. If you don’t have the right fit, your body feels uncomfortable and you’re not achieving overall power and performance. What’s more you can injure yourself.
So if you’ve purchased a new bike, or you want to properly fit to your existing machine, you need to book a bikefit at Bikelab where our trained cycling coach will ensure that you:
- decrease the chances of injury, and
- increase your power output as your muscles work at their optimal angles.
“Too many people underestimate the value of a bike fit. We encourage all our customers to book in for a proper fitting so that they don’t come back saying that they are suffering from a sore neck, shoulders, back, knees, hands, feet or ankles. You can rectify poor handling, maximize efficiency and power output, and importantly, prevent injury.” Bikelab owner, Liam Kelly.
A cyclist will complete over 10,000 pedal revolutions during an hour long ride
Your feet are your foundation – a stable foot means a stable knee and hip
The correct adjustment of shoe cleats is essential otherwise you’re leg is forced into an unnatural rotation, and you’re in pain which, if not rectified, can lead to injury. Our trained professionals will:
- Explain the importance of a proper adjustment.
- Measure forefoot angles, foot rotation, pronation and supination of the foot.
- Video the position of your foot in the cleat and your riding action.
- Measure relevant parts of your body and conduct muscle tests.
- Position your cleat with the ball of your foot resting at the centre-line of the pedal axle.
- Stabilise your feet on the cleat aligning your knees with your foot.
- Determine any leg discrepancy.
- Adjust your cleats according to the initial video analysis and anatomical measurements.
- Adjust your bike, video, adjust, video and then…
- Provide a detailed report.
“Basically we can show you how to stabilise your shoe and pedal stroke, have your knees aligned and your legs equalised when you sit and pedal which means less stress and tension on your muscles and joints and more efficient use of power and muscle function. You will have then found your foundation!” Liam Kelly.
2D to analyse…measure…analyse…adjust…analyse…retest
Our Internationally accredited technician will:
- capture your pedaling motion 2 dimensionally on video,
- perform a quantitative assessment analysing your strength and flexibility,
- measure and record key variables such as back, knee and ankle extension,
- adjust your position to optimise your fit.
We guarantee you’ll be happy with the results!
How long does it take?
A typical session takes at least 1.5 to 2 hours. With an in-person fit, we do all the mechanical work, and capture front, rear and side video. Plus we have stems and a variety of seatposts, seats, handlebars, time trial bars, shoes and shims.
What do I bring?
You just need your bike, bike shoes, and cycling or triathlon outfit. If you have any new equipment you want to install such as shoes, bars, saddle, pedals and so on, bring these too.
“We conduct all our bike fits methodically and meticulously. We also recommend that riders come in for another review after a few weeks so that we can conduct some fine tuning to further improve your goal of attaining optimal power and efficiency.” Liam Kelly.
Injury Prevention…Pain Elimination…Increased Power…Improved Efficiency…Improved Comfort
To ensure comfort, endurance and optimal power we aim to satisfy three key functions:
- Foot stability, alignment of knees and equalization of pedal stroke.
- Correct saddle position, angle of saddle – for and aft – and saddle height.
- Handlebar and stem – the most comfortable position is usually the most efficient and largely depends on some anatomical factors and your purpose as a rider allowing for correct weight distribution and the elimination of overreaching and overloading and importantly easy, safe and comfortable access to your brakes and gear mechanisms.
“We’ve come a long way from the old school mentality of a body of knowledge of sports science which has radically changed the way we train, the position of ourselves on a bike, and the fact that with leading edge technology we can personalize your training by monitoring, measuring and managing your capabilities to make you more in tune with your body and your bike.” Liam Kelly.
